But it is a beautiful sight for me, because finally my Summer Stash Challenge quilt is out of the quilting frame and ready for binding.
I was seriously debating with myself about what to use for the binding while working on the whole last row of blocks. Originally I thought of using a bright multi-colored striped piece of fabric that was already cut, I had intended to use it for sashing for another quilt at one time then didn't.
I thought I could just trim it down a little and it would be perfect. Hmmm. It might be a little too much stripe though, and may a solid dark brown would accent the whole thing off more beautifully. Do I have a big enough piece of dark brown? I'm sure I do.
However, I kept thinking about the meaning of this quilt, the challenge, and the whole thing of what it represents. Yes.. using from our stash was one main thing. And the pieces that I was debating about using for the binding were already in my stash. But. I would need to cut them. Plus, I would need to trim off all the excess backing that was around the quilt. It really seemed like a waste, because what would I really do with that piece of sheet that was trimmed off? It isn't very colorful. I would save it of course for something else. But what? And when would I ever get to it?
So I have decided I am going to fold the backing over and self bind. It won't be as striking from the back as the dark brown would be or the multi-colored stripe. But it really does make much more sense.
There were some nice comments Monday about the Fern Bisel Peat picture. And many who have never heard of her. I don't think she was well known. So maybe I will just share some more of her work from my collection of vintage children's books. The girl washing her doll clothes came from this one "Little Housekeepers", copyright MCMXXXIV, (1934). This book was also published under at least two other titles - "Mulberry Bush" and "The Picture and Rhyme Book". There are maybe more. And Fern also used pseudonyms. I'll tell about that sometime. But they are all the same lovely illustrations of girls doing their daily/weekly chores.
Here is what the Wednesday girl is doing. Mending her socks. I thought it kind of appropriate for today, since I have had a needle and thimble in my hands since 5:30am, and will probably spend most of my spare time today sewing the binding on my quilt. I hope I don't start having trouble with my decision to self-bind. That striped fabric still does look pretty cute.. and what would the solid brown look like?
ANYWAYS..
I know there has been some other progress too on some of the other Summer Stash Challenge quilts.. I have been sneaking little peeks here and there. I am SO looking forward to posting about them soon.
Think after I throw towels in the dryer and wash breakfast dishes and have some lunch, I'll put some more coffee on and try and make my way around blogland. I miss everyone!

What a happy quilt. I'm sure your quilt will look great whatever binding method you use. I've never done the foldover from the back before. Thanks for sharing more of your quilt illustrations.
I vote for the fold-over.
You are killing me with those luscious illustrations. This is my favorite era and one of my favorite illustrators ever. Thanks for sharing and I hope you show more.
I see those striped socks in the illustration and I thought maybe you should use the stripes after all.
NAH! Just fold-over! Your quilt is so pretty, bright and colorful and maybe the stripes would be too much!
I have several self bound quilts and they are fun and easy to do. Its a good idea, especially if you like your backing fabric alot. It will be very sweet. I'm excited to see it. I love your vintage book pictures. They are unbelievably sweet. What talent she had/has. Bind away and don't let your shoulder hurt you! Mine is starting to feel slightly better. But the next few days, no cutting or sewing for me. Tomorrow I'm going to show vintage toys and then Friday some fabric.
Good job Eileen.
I don't know Eileen, I understand why you would like to do a fold over, but that striped fabric just sings. If you have any misgivings, go for the stripe!
You are still hiding the quilt from all of us :)! I'm sure you have made your decision about the binding by now and it will be the right one.
Those illustrations are very sweet, just keep showing them.
congrats on your quilt so far! and, i must confess, what is self-binidng? i don't know...
your collection of vintage children's books must be truly wonderful...i love the pictures you are sharing! =)
I did like the multistrip for the binding.. It good to see the quilt out and around again!
The cards are very beautiful and I love the "childiss way" they are. Do you collect this cards or are they something you have from earlier years?
Take care!
I love the colors in that quilt. I would go with the brown binding. It will make everything pop.
Your quilt is looking so gorgeous! Any binding you choose will be wonderful. And those illustrations are so beautiful, I love them all! x
It is a beautiful quilt! Whatever you chose to bind it with - good luck and Happy Quilting!

I was hunting for a weekend bag and this is PERFECTO, big enough for everything, love the pockets!! I need tons of them (how did you know?)...ah..even hand quilted inside, everything is a favourite. I'll upload the pic in my blog next week :D
much love and hugs...big fat kiss too :D
my vote's for separate binding, trim off stripe excess, throw it away, job done, no longer needed. but i can see some more brown stitching in that fold-over binding. & we luv that brown stitching.
okay...i'm trying to wrap up a few things...to be done tomorrow!!!
so that i can get my 'completed' badge.
i like yours...my ma-inlaw swears by folding the back over for self binding, i on the otherhand, just can't do it and make it look good.
so i don't.
i always make my binding...pieced not bias.
good luck my dear.
I bet it feels good to have it off the quilting frame! I can't wait to see it all spread out!
