Vintage Thingies Thursday-Childhood Friend

Hmmm. I really did not intend on going from one Thursday to the next with only one post in between. But this week that's how it seemed to work out. I think it's this beautiful weather we're having. That's what I'll blame it on. But anyways, this is a very fun meme that I decided to join a couple weeks ago. It is hosted by Lisa over at the Confessions of an Apron Queen, and if you would like to hop on board or just look at some of the other great vintage things everyone is posting about today, click the picture of the apron lady and check it out.

~~~~~~~
This is me in 1967. And my little brothers. And my best buddy Peter. I had wanted one of those big walking girl dolls to dress up and pretend was my little sister, since I didn't have any sisters, but apparently this big boy baby doll was more affordable. I remember being upset when I first got him. But I learned to love him. He could wear my brothers' toddler clothes. and he went everywhere with me except to school.
The day came though when I got "too old" to play with dolls anymore. I had to pack them all up and send them to some "other little girls" who were less fortunate than me. I remember NOT wanting to send Peter, but I was 13 years old now, and only allowed to keep one doll to take with me into adulthood. I'm not really sure of the reasoning behind that.. but it was the "rule". So it was either Peter or my Barbie.. because those were the two I played with the most and that had made it that far without being totally worn out. It really didn't seem like much of a choice.. because I was sewing wardrobes for Barbie, and couldn't let her go. So my real Peter is somewhere else now.. if he survived..
~~~~~~~~
Then a few years ago, I discovered that there was a place on a Bay we could go and look for our long lost toys, and get them back. Probably not the exact same ones, but close. So I went looking for Peter. And I found his twin.

I quickly filled out the adoption papers, and he came to live with me. He has accumulated quite a bit of stuff already.. and has taken over my mom's old trunk..
I always keep my eye peeled for little clothes and toys for him, especially if they are from the 1950's-60's era. And my kids and dear husband have even joined in. For my birthday this year they bought Peter his very own little red pedal car..

..and he owns several different sporting outfits and hunting gear.. all in the proper colors. And wears them at the appropriate times of the year. I'm glad I have a family who helps me have fun.

So now I am off to catch up on blogs. I totally skipped reading yesterday.. just think what all I am missing! I will be popping over soon..

I had one of those big walking dolls as a child. (and I had very few dolls). Instead I played mainly with my "stick horse" and pretended to be a cowgirl. I was from a big city just south of San Francisco and I thought farm life looked so wonderful.
I love what you have done with Peter. What a great display. The picture of you by the way, looks just like you!

I'm so happy for you that Peter has come home! He's adorable and looks so spiffy in his little red car! Your family is wonderful in helping you purchase items for Peter. Congrats!

I love Peter and his new "old" peddle car. You dote over Peter like some folks dote over their pets. Not a bad thing because Peter doesn't eat much. :)

Peter is a doll--in every sense of the word! Like you, I have no sisters but I have two brothers. One of them is named Peter! I never had any boy dolls growing up. I think I would have loved having one like yours. He is SO cute!!

Oh, I loved this post from start to finish. Really. First the picture of you with the doll, and all of the other vintage toys is just great. I could even relate to the dissapointment of him not being a girl, for me, it was my first bike, I wanted a banana seat bike, and never got one,mine was a regular old ugly bike. I could have cried. Then I read about giving up your Peter, I was so sad for you. Imagine having to do that broke my heart. And before I could finish reading, the first thing I thought about was Ebay. That is great you got one like it, I so love the fact your family has helped you establish his own trunk!! The petal car is classic..... The one thing I wish I had from my childhood is a Rudy the Robot....crazy huh? This was a great post! I really enjoyed it.

Eileen this is such a sweet story. I'm glad you shared it with everyone. My gosh he's got some tricked out things, that car is AMAZING. I can't believe his wardrobe too. THat picture of you with Peter as a kid is so so precious. I love it. You should have it framed and put it where you keep Peter's things. I should show my little pink stove I guess. I love vintage toys!!

I'm glad you found Peter's twin! Wouldn't it be neat to go back in the past and grab all of our toys? I get such a kick out of seeing things I used to have that I totally forgot about!

Lovely story and lovely dolls! Isn't it strange how we remember things from our childhood and still have to try to understand why it happened? The parents didn't need to justify their decisions and we just did what was told. Maybe you could have kept Peter and maybe my mother could have chosen a nicer colour than grey for my dress I didn't wear for my best friend's 9th birthday. I chose not to go because I should have worn that dress. My mother was offended but so was I; and she couldn't see it.

I am so sorry to hear that you had to give Peter away. An impossible choice if you ask me.
I love your new Peter and his car are adorable. I guess you have been realy attached to your dolls as I always has. I was still playing with my dols when I was twelve. In secret ofcourse!
My special doll still lives with my mother but my teddy is staying here with me.
I hope Peter is up and around all the time in your house.
Take care...

I stumbled on your blog and was wonder struck immediately by how much you reminded me of me in your photo! Then read on to find that you too had two brothers and grew up in Northeast Ohio (but now live in Sydney, Australia). I didn't have a boy doll but rather a Chatty Kathy that I loved. It might sound weird but when I saw the photo I thought it was of me! I enjoyed the rest of your posts and am now yearning to travel back to walk the earth of Ohio....kathy (material obsession)

Hia Eileen, how wonderful that you managed to find another doll like your Peter! We moved around a lot so I don't have many of my old toys at all. I remember a princess ballerina Barbie with a gold crown in her head. I think she along with Sindy dolls from England went to my younger sister.

I think toys from our childhoods are special. I try not to keep throwing and sorting my children's ones until it's very necessary. Maybe I'm rebelling against my Mum still and being more like my Nana? LOL

What a great tale of re-discovery.
I had Peter's female twin,Linda. She was baby Jesus during a nativity play on one Christmas eve in the 50's.
I just wanted to let you know my daughter, Natalie finshed her lovely quilt today and quite frankly is putting her mom to shame with her beautiful work. We joined the Stash Challenge together and I couldn't be more proud of my daughter and the creative and beautiful work she did! Check Natalie's precious quilt out at homesweethideaway.blogspot.com
Hugs and have a great weekend,
Beth
