Vintage Thingies Thursday

For couple of weeks now I have been reading about this on Lit and Laundry's blog. It looked like so much fun, so I think I will join in for a while.. until I run out of vintage thingies to show. You can click on the picture below, and find out how you too can join in.. So here it goes. These are things that I have hanging about.. all around on my kitchen walls. My kitchen is very small.. and I really don't like to cook much. But it is hard to resist old kitchen gadgets, especially metal ones if they have wooden knobs or handles.. especially if they are painted. So I went around and pulled down all the things and bunched them together.. everything that had a wooden knob or handle..

I broke this picture down into two groups so you could actually see what's there. Of course everyone recognizes an egg-beater. Don't they? And the little sifter.. I love this one with the flowers painted on it. The big sifter in the back hung in my mother's kitchen. I don't think she ever used it, but it must have been something passed down in our family because she really didn't just display things unless they had meaning.
I little round cookie cutter with a green knob. And a gadget with a pastry wheel on one end and a bottle opener on the other. Why do those two things go together I wonder?

Below is a nifty grater I found at a rummage sale once.. complete with different attachments. I love this thing, and I actually do use it! It is wonderful for shredding a few carrots into a salad. Very sharp.

Another grater below.. for shredding cheese I think.. but I don't use it. Kinda rusty. It just hangs on the wall. And this other thing with the wooden handle is for cutting pie dough when you are first mixing the lard and the flour together. It actually goes to a very large wooden bowl, and there is another cutter that goes with it.. but maybe I'll show those another day.
And one more up close look at the little sifter. Things like this make me smile.
Go take a look at Confessions of and Apron Queen to see what others are showing, and to find out how you can join in if you want. Today she's picturing one of my favorite things... but go look and see.

Welcome to VTT! You have a wonderful
collection of vintage kitchen gadgets
The wooden knobed cutter is that a
donut cutter or cookie cutter? My
family had many of these kinds of
cutters, much easier with the
big wooden handle to use.

Normally this is something I would snap at joining. But I'll have to admire from a far for now. Love the little sifter!!! It is so so darling. Wouldn't that design make cute fabric. I have a few of those old kitchen gadgets myself. I love them. They make me happy to look at them. Simple times. Very cute stuff. Thanks Eileen.

Lovely old kitchen stuff! I have a modern grater just like yours and I use it a lot. I think the big sifter is used to press cooked vegetables to mash. I have one like that (from the 80s) and I use it to mash steamed apples for apple sauce. And my mother mashed tomatoes for me when I was a baby (but her thingie looked more like yours!).

Hi Eileen,
I loved looking at all your vintage cooking utensils- they were fabulous- I have a flour sifter that is metal - I don't use it but it comes from somewhere in my childhood - perhaps my mother's childhood and I brought it home to remember my gran and mom baking. Every time I look in the cupboard I think of them both- they were both fabulous bakers and my mother still is.
They also had a meat grinder that they used to make meat and sandwich meat.
Thanks for twigging my memories.
Regards from a Western Canadian Quilter,
Anna
