Mennonite Quilt Auction - Kidron Ohio

It was a beautiful day Saturday.. bright and clear.. not too hot. The weather has been simply gorgeous here.

The first thing we saw at the entrance was a little train. The cars were made out of 50 gallon metal drums, and it was very cute. The children could get a ride for $1

The people started coming early. Breakfast was served at 7:30. We got there at 8:30 and there were still pancakes left. Lots of Amish and other good folk...

The whole thing was held under this HUGE tent.. I mean gigantic.. like a circus tent. There were quilts and comforters on racks for dislay to purchase outright..
Then there were racks and racks of the quilts to be auctioned.. you could walk up and down the rows looking. These were all covered with plastic though, and it wasn't very good for taking pictures. I did some.. just so you could see. They came from all over the area, and believe me, they were works of art. I think I saw one that was machine quilted. All the rest were done by hand.

The one below is "Graham Cracker".. all vintage fabrics.
an applique logged cabin..
The crowd was gathering for the auction... I have no idea how many people.
Here is a grandmother's flower garden of all vintage fabrics.. simply gorgeous.
This "card trick" was not under plastic, so you can see the beautiful hand-quilting. All the quilts were of this quality.
Then the action began. There was a lovely quilt of vintage fabrics set up in an old fashioned frame.. the kind I'm used to, and some ladies were working on it.. I would have loved to have joined them.
Auctions are simply wonderful...
Here you can see one being held up.. it was a gorgeous applique with a fall scene. The next quilt in line is being displayed on a bed..
The quilting on that one was simply magnificent. I think it brought over $1200

here is another.. stunning applique and quilting..
And over to the side there was a h-u-g-e sales table. Goodies galore! Fabric piled high, all the vintage linens and doilies you could imagine.. and at least six racks of unfinished quilt tops.. many of them vintage..
I had to keep making trips over there. I spent way more than a dollar this time. My wonderful "seat-saver" gaurded my treasures..

We did not stay for the whole auction. The batteries were dying in my camera, I bought all the stuff I wanted, and I wasn't planning on bidding for a quilt. On the way home we stopped at Shisler's Cheese..

A little gnome greeted us at the door..
Wish these two lived in my yard..

I am heading out for church this morning, but later today after lunch I will take pictures of my loot. I cannot wait to show you!

WOW!!!! What a fun filled day! I cannot believe, well YES I can, how many quilts there were! Those Amish sure can create beautiful things! I think I am most in love with the wedding ring and the vintage fabric pieces, but I am sure there were PLENTY more!!

Thank you for sharing. Oh, can you go and snag that cute dutch couple? I collect the kissing ones. If I find a pink pottery girl vase, I will get it for you.

hugs,
Becky

This day must have been great, and an quilt auction is something we do not have here in Norway. And all the quilts are handquilted, wow it must have been awesome to be there.
Your are so lucky to have someone who guards your treasures.....

Hello Eileen, I'd post the lotus for you if I could. The overdosing did the trick, after months of waiting, it bloomed non-stop :D

Whoa..beautiful post. So many yummy quilts and really, I am quite fascinated with the Amish people, I read about them and how they maintain their life exactly like in the past. I would love to visit an Amish community one day, it would be so cool :D

Hey that choo-choo train looks like lots of fun..dont think it can fit me in right hahahaa...

Lots of love and hugs always :D

Eileen, This sounds so much like the Kutztown Folk Festival that I go to every year. How wonderful!! The same thing happens with the quilts at the end of the festival, they are auctioned off!! It is soooo fun to attend. One year a quilt went for $15,000, yes you read it right fifteen thousand dollars. Woo, hoo!!

Where is the auction you went to held? It would be so much fun to go if I were ever in the area. Is it a yearly event? These women are soooo talented, you can really see it.

Lovely quilts!! Have a great day! Jackie

Hello, Eileen! I found you via Melanie of JellyBeanAngel :o) You have a wonderful blog. And I so much enjoy all about this great outing. All those quilts give me a taste of home...I live in Norway now, but I am originally from Pennsylvania, from near Lancaster, PA, where the Mennonite and Amish live, farm and create amazingly beautiful quilts. All these quilts reminds me of seeing quilts drying on clothes lines back home...Thank you for sharing. Happy Days :o)

Oh wow. I wish I could have been there. What an event. It made me homesick for all the good people I grew up around in PA. Words can't say how much I wish I could go to something so wonderful like that.

what a great opportunity, wish I could have been there. HOw fun to watch those be auctioned. and so glad to see that they brought that much and that people there appreciate how much work goes into making a quilt.

It breaks my heart to see the Quilt pink quilts on eBay each year go for such low prices... not even the cost of the fabrics.

Thanks for sharign all the wonderful photos. Love from Texas! ~bonnie
