Vintage Thingies Thursday Raggedy Ann

I really won't go into everything that Raggedy Ann has meant to me. A lot is all I'll say. But today I'll show you just a few of the older things in my Raggedy collection.. to fit the "VTT" meme.

These first two books are 1960 reprints of the 1940 editions. The Laughing Brook and Lucky Pennies are first editions printed in 1943 and 1932.

Marcella is my most treasured Raggedy book.. it is a first edition printed in 1929.
Here is a shelf of my oldest Raggedy Anns and Andys. The ones on the far left look pretty bad I know. They were handmade many many years ago, and came to me in this condition with nothing to wear. So I adopted them and gave them clothes and a home on the shelf. The rest of them are all authentic Johnny Gruelle dolls, ranging from the 1940's to 1976.
Here are some patterns put out by McCall's to make Raggedy Ann. These have been being made by mothers and grandmothers for years. The first two are the some of the earliest ones printed. I know there are a lot of copies made of these patterns now, and I do have some of them, but I am only showing my own authentic vintage patterns today..

The Simplicity pattern I thought was very interesting, as it is not "Raggedy Ann".. but there is no mistaking her..

Here is a doll I picked up at a flea market several years ago. I do have a few handmade Raggedy Anns that I didn't make myself, and she is one of them. I simply could not resist her. She holds in her lap my beloved teddy bear from when I was little, and sits by my dollhouse on top of the piano.
If you would like to join in with me, and a whole bunch of other who are playing Vintage Thingies Thursdays..(it is a great excuse to show your stuff..).. then go on over to Lisa's blog "Confessions of an Apron Queen". You'll find out how to sign up, or just look around at everyone else's goodies.

Hia Eileen, I do love old story books. They are so less streetwise and smart alec than a lot of what is out there for children now. My what a collection of dolls! When we get close toHalloween I'll show a pic of the 1st doll I made - a Halloween witch "Miss Crumble".

You have an amazing collection! When I was 17 we had an American exchange student staying with us for the school year and she had a Raggedy Ann doll. At that time I believed it was the name of just her doll, but later I have found out that there are others as well. I must study the history of those dolls more closely. They seem to be a big thing, with books and all.

Wonderful! My sister and I each had one - Now I need to find them and get them out. I remember it was the only doll my sister liked. I made one for each of my girls. The old books are great too - brings back lots of memories

Oh I love Raggedy Ann! I had a store bought one when I was very little, and the one that my mom made for me. She made my daughter a little one when she was a baby too. They bring back such warm homemade memories. x

Hi Eileen,
I love Raggedy Ann and made her and Andy in a class in the early 80's. Wow that is a while ago now - she is a large one and so is Andy-
I have always loved dolls but have only made 3 of them. I made a clown doll for my son that had dress up clothes ( tie shoes, buckles, snaps and such) They did hang around my sewing room for a long time - I will need to dig them out of the basement and put them back where I can enjoy them.
Thanks for sharing your collection.
Regards,
Anna

Oh my gosh, do you know how much I love Raggedy Ann? Do you have any idea of the value of those books? I think the Betsy Bonnet String is very rare. I have the old Marcella book too, and Wooden Willie. Most of mine are from the 60s though.

The first pattern you show is the one I use, because for some reason I think the 18" size is the most authentic. I have patterns for Beloved Belindy and the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees too, but I haven't made them (yet).

I feel like you are my long lost sister! I would love to visit you and your Raggedy family.

Oh my gosh! I just recently started with all this blogging business, and I just happened to find your blog about Raggedy Anne. When I was a little girl, I had a Raggedy *Andy*. (my older sister had Raggedy Anne) I loved that doll to pieces. Literally. I carted him with me everywhere. He slept in my bed every night. He went with us as our family traveled overseas and back. As he wore out, my mother (the doll surgeon) replaced pieces and parts of him, a leg here, an arm there, until finally when I was about 16, there was just nothing left to hold him together. I still have the thread-bear little bit of fabric that was his face - his eyes and his smile- tucked away in a tin box of childhood treasures.

Ohhhhh! Your RA book collection has different ones than what I have. I wish I had those to read. Think I'll go read RA in Cookie Land now, or maybe the Paper Dragon. How I love those old books.
