Tuesday we prepared and served a meal for a large family of 137 after a memorial service for their loved one. I really enjoy doing this because I know how nice it is to sit down with friends and family after a sad event and have a nice dinner together without worry. I didn't get any pictures then...
..last night was our annual fund raising auction. Lots of lovely produce and hand baked items. Isn't it beautiful? Look at all the yummies. This stuff seemed to sell for much higher bids than even any of the crafts or household items. I think it may be because of the economy. People don't feel good about spending their money on "things".. but bidding up a loaf of homemade bread to $15, or pie, or a basket of apples was ok.
And believe me, some of this stuff went high.
These gorgeous peppers were my win. I even hate to tell you how much I bid for 12 pints. But it's all going towards a roof on our building.. and Mr Attic enjoys eating them so much. I don't do any sort of canning like this, and he loves hot peppers.
Here is the crowd.. we gather in this big room for things like this..
Everyone was bidding, even the folks working at the registration table..
I bid from the kitchen. That's where I was most of the evening.. serving sloppy joe sandwiches, kraut dogs, apple dumplings and pie with scoops of ice cream. Here are a couple of my helpers. I have good help. Even though it is a lot of work and takes time.. I really do enjoy it so much.
So today I'm playing catch up with laundry and such. It is a cool and cloudy day.. very fall-like. And lookie here what I noticed out back. This is MY Burning Bush. I think maybe it will be just as red as our neighbor's. You can see a peek of theirs in the background..
Hope you are headed for a nice weekend..

Ohh - little bits are fun!
Those bake sale pictures - yum!
I was in here just two minutes ago looking at your previous post, and when I came back to answer the question you left on my blog... there was this new entry! Those peppers looks lovely... and it sounds like you had a good time at the fund raising.
oh... back to your question. The carrot roses... I just use a potato peeler to cut long thin slices from the carrot. I then boil them for a couple of minutes to soften them a bit, and then I just roll them up an stick them in the icing on the cake. Easy peasy... (and healthier than the sugar carrots a lot of people use to decorate carrot cakes with...)
I love the flowers, the food and the fabric!!
What a display of yummi looking food! I hope you all paid heaps for the food, a new roof is a worthy cause :-) The peppers looks delicious.
what great yummies at your fund raising auction...and how wonderful there was such a crowd! mr. attic...giggle...
Good to hear from you. It looks like a lot of people have been very busy at your church. The bread looks very yummy.
i would have bid on the peppers too. how nice that you were able to get so many. serve with a little bread. slice of parmesan. cured italian sausage. & some wine. yumm.
Flowers, food, fabric, friends-who can ask for more. I can't decide which looked more yummy-the cakes or the double-pink fabrics. :)
What a spread! I'd love homemade pie, bread and jam about now. I live in the land of LARGE grocery store chains and would love a little Mom and Pop shop or farmer's market to be close by but they just can't seem to compete. Homemade is best. I hope your auction made lots of $$$.
Eileen, That looks like such a fun time. All the food look delicious. I love hot peppers too! Mr. Attic (how funny) has good taste... literally! I also have several burning bushes and they look fabulous right now, very red!
Dearest Eileen, now that's a big crowd and oh..those food, you should have warned me first...anyway since the fall, the diet has gone down the drain! How I wished I could taste some of the food! Happy weekend to you :D
oh WOW.....MESSY KAREN is making me hungry.....forget the fabric and sewing...LET'S EAT!!!
You are doing a great job at the church; I hope they are not leaving all the dishes for you as well! - It is funny how cakes and such seem somehow more affordable at fundraising sales, even when they are not more necessary than some crafts.
It is good to see you have started to grow some stash after using so much for the challenge quilt ;-)
The flowers are beautiful. I can't believe you still have them! The fabric for 10 cents - seriously a great find. You get the best deals. But the bake sale!!! Oh my gosh. What wonderfulness. The health department around here has pretty much banned bake sales. It is horrible that we can't do them. All the pies and things look so good. My dad would have loved those peppers. I'm sure "MR Attic!" will love them. They look really great. What fun treats. I need to live in Ohio. But we both know that!
Wow your are realy doing lots of great work and it looks like great fun to me.
Eileen, please stop by my blog...I have an award for you...you deserve it!
Have a great weekend.
Oh looking at al those yummie goodies.... I wish I could have been there and taste a bit here and there...
Hia Eileen, what a wonderful gesture from your church to hold a dinner to unite those who had lost loved ones.
Ooo those cakes do look yummy!
Lovely little lot of fabrics too.
What a great idea for a fundraiser! I would love to bid on homemade goodies. I'm going to recommend this at my church.
I've never seen a burning bush before (that I remember). I can't wait to see what yours looks like fully engulfed!
You do such a beatiful job, Eileen, you can be sure your time is well spent there, even when you wish you were doing what you really enjoy. All the yummi food, oh boy, I can understand people wanted to have them! And you are right, one can never have enough from fabric ;-)) !!
You ARE such a busy lady with such as huge heart of gold! It looks like a lot of fun at the auction. I probably would have spent my grocery shopping money there, too. The peppers are gorgeous!
Have a super week!
xo

It looks like you have such a wonderful Church family. Your pictures remind me of when I was a little girl at my Grandmother's church in Texas. I remember being at her side in the Church kitchen helping wash the dishes. x
