Laundry Sprinkler -VTT

Thanks to Lisa The Apron Queen for hosting the Vintage Thingies Thursdays. Click here to go to her blog for links to lots of other vintage posts.

The other day we were talking about ironing and sprinkling clothes. I definitely remember my mother sprinkling the clothes for ironing. I still have her sprinkler.

It is a little bent up on the top, and the cork part has dried up and shriveled so it doesn't really work without dripping water all over the place. But in it's day, it could sprinkle a whole day's worth of laundry fresh from the clothes line.

The little top thing was made so you could just stick it into a bottle.. usually a pop bottle I think, but I'm not sure what kind of bottle this is. It sets now on my kitchen shelf next to a milk bottle..(remember when the milk man used to come? I was wee little, but I remember him my mom washing and setting out the empty bottles for him.)

I had to try and think where my mom's old wicker clothes basket was. Here it is.. I found it.. I guess it has been a bed for the stuffed toys in my daughter's room for quite a few years now.Her toys are probably considered vintage. There is a Pound Puppy I see.. and a Care Bear. Maybe one of these times I will have to do a post on all the old toys here. ooops.. that would probably fill up a month of days.

You have a very nice sprinker bottle! I have what my mother also used to have: an old (vodka) bottle with the screw cap pierced from the inside with a little nail to make nice holes for the water.

ahhh...I recognized the blue monkey from my daughter's toys. She loved her monkey. I still have my Mom's sprinkler bottle in a box somewhere.

These are the best thing to use for ironing.

Sprinkle your clothing or towels and lay them off in a pile one on top of the other until they are each sprinkled.

Then roll the entire lot into a roll and leave sit for an hour. Come back to iron with a hot, non steam iron and everything will iron so easily with no need for starch or extra spraying.

If you can't get to your clothes within the hour then place them in a bag and put them in the fridge to prevent mildew. You can even leave them so overnight.

You can still purchase the tops from Lehman's Hardware or bottles and tops from Vermont Country Store.

I love your vintage posts! Yes, I remember when the milkman delivered milk, what a flashback. We also had the Charles Chips man deliver chips in pretzels in the big tins. I recently found out that they still produce and found a store where I could get them. But it is is Vermont. I happened to be there one day and picked up 2 tins and reminisced with my kids. They thought it was funny that milk and chips could be delivered to your door.

I remember we had a sprinkler bottle when I was growing up. In fact my step mom had a big contraption in the kitchen called a "Mangler". She would dampen items like sheets, and then run them through the big rollers. Aren't we lucky to live in a day of permanent press?

I have a laundry basket just like that one! In fact, my mom has told me that I slept in it as a newborn! She made a cushion for the bottom and apparently I was quite happy in there! :0)

I am always looking for one of the sprinklers. I can never seem to find them with the top. I am sitting out on VTT this week, I did not get my post done in time….wanted to stop by and say hello.

I have one of the laudry spinkler tops. Mine is bent too. I don't have a bottle to go with it though. It belonged to my husband's grandmother. Boy, do I remember having to iron my dad's white short sleeved shirts. I had to roll the sleeves up twice. Those were all he wore. Every week. I am glad I can buy my husband wrinkle free shirts. Hurrah to that inventor!!

I remember summers at my grandmother's house. She had a ringer washer and no dryer. Everything was hung on the line. She had a milkman too!

when I was 6 my sister was in a terrible automobile accident. my mother flew to california to be with her. She was in a coma for 3 months. my aunt would come to fix food and to iron/do laundry. she brought her sprinkler with her. my mom had a sprayer but I remember this from my aunt. I would watch her sprinkle and iron. it was a hard time for me because I missed my mom so much but my aunt was so sweet and lovely with all of us. she died at age 100 and I've always had a special place in my heart for her and that little sprinkler thingie.

Ohh... I remember my mum sprinkling when ironing as well... She used a plastic cup with changeable spouts. I could use that same cup for juice... lol...

Awwww that brings back memories, for sure...love the milk bottle too, I remember the milkman coming daily with his horsedrawn cart even in the late 70s.

I remember my mom using one of these when I was a little girl. And I was helping clean my grandma's house a few weeks ago and came across one and swiped it! Thanks for sharing. Also love the raggedys!

My mom still uses that same laundry basket! The handles are tied on with shoelaces! "It does the job!" she says!

I had to laugh at where you found the laundry basket- mine has wool in it and looks similar. It was made by that hippy chap who made the log basket. They are just so useful and look gorgeous.

What a lovely sprinkler bottle too. It's so much more attractive than the plastic spray gun sorts in the shop now.

I remember my Mom's sprinkler-looked just like that. I thought of it when I read your previous post about ironing. We used to watch American Bandstand together while she ironed-boy, does that date me :)

I remember my mom sprinkling my dad's shirts. The sprinkler I remember was yellow plastic. Then she would roll them up and store them in a blue plastic bag in the refrigerator. I guess it allowed them to get evenly damp and to not smell while they waited for ironing day. :-) I'd love to have a sprinkler if I could find one.
