B&W ..and a Little Story

I'll post this over on Jackie's blog too, but here is a peek at my beginnings of the Black and White Quilt. I'm going to try and make two - the first one using a pattern from this old leaflet..
My rotary cutter has been busy.. I think I'm almost done with this part. Just waiting for the mail.. I have a friend who is contributing a print that I don't have yet.. can't wait!
And I was TRULY going to refrain from EVER posting any pictures of the cold and ice.. we are all seeing enough of it I am sure. But I couldn't help it this morning.. the icicles hanging off the back awning...

Ok. You can stop here. Or you can go on and read a story. This was one of my favorite books as a little girl. I could put myself right in these pages, even though I did not have an older sister.. I had three older brothers. (And I do have a cousin Jane!) Made many a row of paper dolls.. complete with wardrobes. It is the inspiration for my blog banner. And now I am never for want of someone to play with.

I love all of the cold weather pictures! What amazing icicles. And thank you so much for sharing the book! It would have been one of my favorites too. Happy Belated Birthday! x

OOO that pattern looks interesting. I can't wait to see what it looks like. I have some icicle pictures too that I will be posting soon as well, but those are some of the biggest I have seen yet! Your book seems so familiar, after reading it. I am wondering if I have ever read it as a child. Hmmmm....

Beautiful but deadly looking icicles. No icicles here just lots of snow and wicked wind chills! I saw your b/w project on the b/w challenge blog. Very informative and sure to be helpful to anyone wanting to try that pattern.

Good luck with your B&W quilt! I loved the story, and I have a feeling we might have had the same book.

Wow, that leaflet looks like a lot of fun. The ice on the window? Not so much fun. It's just too cold here for words! Another two days of this they say. -30 means lots of time to stay in and stitch! :-)

I just enjoyed looking at that old pattern leaflet....I can't wait to see what it looks like.....uh...looks like you might need a new blade for your rotary cutter....that's a 'beefy' looking stack of fabric you 'whacked'!
That is a sweet looking little book too. Don't you just love the style and method of how they colored and printed the pages back in their day?
No snow and icicles here...but, like I said...my heater has been running and running and running.....

That quiltpattern has a lot of different sized pieces in it! Good for you to take that on! And you will do a fabulous job, no doubt :)
I love the story. I think I may have to tell it to my daugther. It's a good lesson to learn -on sooooo many levels!

I can't wait to see more of your black and white challenge.
The story was so sweet and I adored it. I can see where your headboard is taken from, nice!!
I have a sister but she is 6 years older then me and my brother is 12 years older then me. So I can easily put myself into this little girl......
I found my playworld in books and more books too. One of the good things is that there is liberary's everywhere... I still love to read, but my time to read is limited. I guess I choose quilting!!
I wish you a lovely weekend!

I remember this book. My own brothers were not into playing with dolls so my world was with books, art, and even paper dolls. I was a child in the 50's and this type of book brings back my Alice & Jerry school book memories!

Your quilt will be wonderful, I think. Excellent icicle photo but be careful and don't walk under them!

Oh gosh, I just love stories like that! Wasn't life perfect back in the good old days? At least it always looked that way in books.

Thanks for sharing the book. It brought back many childhood memories! I learned to read through the Dick and Jane books.

Oh my those icicles could kill someone, but I would grab one and eat it!! I will tell you my first love is quilting but very, very, very, close are children's books and that is a book, I am going to try and find. i love that story so very much, I am off to ab-books, where they seem to have evrything. have you ever read, Flicka, Ricka and Dicka. I adore those books.

Oh Eileen, just looking at the patterns made me dizzy..you know how 'good' I am at sewing hehe ;p
Cant wait the see the final outcome of your sewing. Those icicles..wow..I've never seen such long ones, snow on blog-land was plenty everywhere, but these icicles are huge. Hope spring comes soon. We are celebrating 'spring' here..the chinese new year according to the chinese lunar calendar..though I often wondered why spring as there was never winter here. Lovely story, I'll get my girls to have a look at it later as they dont have such books here.

I adore vintage children's book such as this Eileen, thank you so much for going to the trouble to post the entire book here. I still have a few of my old books from the 50's & 60's and I've saved so many of my daughter's childhood books for her children (I'm such a hopeful Mom, my DD is only 14!). Best, Ani

I too love old books, Children's books!!!! My favorite, I enjoyed your story.

Icicles. . .when I lived in Michigan we had them like that, I would go out and knock them off with a broom, I was so afraid that when my youngest son, who was in kindergarten then, would be coming in and one would fall and hurt him. He would pick them up and eat them, finally I had to make sure I picked them up and tossed them far from the house!

I cannot wait to see your new quilt. . .I envy you and others who quilt. . .and yes, my penny rug mat is my first try. . .I am waiting for an order of wool to arrive, since I paid a king's ransome for it I want to try and make a super nice one with that fabric!

Stay warm and safe,
Martha♥

This is where you got your paper dolls on your header! They are so cute. I want to jump into that book and be Linda! I want to watch my mom in the kitchen and play with scrapie and kitten! That sounds like a wonderful life. I love the book. Good luck with your B&W pattern. I've always wanted to take one of the complicated looking patterns in old quilt books and do something with them. Fun. It is cold here but nothing like there and those icicles are unbelievable.

About the icicles.... they are so beautiful that they don't even look real. They look crafted somehow.

The book. Oh, my gosh. I love it and I probably read it when i was a kid. :) It looks like the pictures of Dick and Jane and that was my reader as a kid. :0 Thanks so much. Linda

Wow, those are huge icicles. No ice here but terribly cold & windy. Temperature as I type this is 9. That B&W quilt is going to be awesome. Thanks for sharing your book with us, it's so charming. I just love vintage childrens books. Stay warm!

This is an awesome story. Thanks for bringing back fond memories.

I love teapots and tea sets too. Every year we would get new sets for Christmas. Unfortunately, I am the oldest of 6 (5 girls) so my toys were pretty much worn out by the time they were all grown up.
I have just had to collect some of my own!

Oh... looking forward to seeing more of your B/W project. It looks exciting.

I've got a couple of books from when I was little as well... My youngest girl has them now... Hope there is something left of them when she's finished with them.

I can't wait to see what you do with that B&W fabric! I for one enjoy the cold pictures since I never get to see out my window here :) It's shorts and t-shirt weather here right now!

Icicles & snow already?!!! I have no idea that you get these in the first few days of autumn, over in Ohio! Wow! Yesterday it was 85 degrees (29 deg. Celsius) in Tokyo & we were perspiring like piggies!
I love, love, love the cute book!
