First Quilt ~ Last Quilt

I hope I'm not to late to join in. These are two blogs that are new to me, but I am definitely adding them to my favorite's list. Camille and Carrie are hosting a fun week parading our first quilt we ever made compared to our most recent one.

This is my first quilt. I made it when I was 13, with my mother's help in the hand quilting section. Very huge large stitches using heavy cotton crochet thread.. my hand got so tired of doing it! But I really concentrated on getting my corners to match up on the blocks.. and made them all by myself.

As you can see it has served it's purpose and then some. I was horrified when I actually found it while cleaning out Mom's house.. it was apparently used as a drop cloth after it had faded.. and then washed again many times. It is falling apart in many places. I'm sure no one ever imagined that I would actually want and cherish this later on.

I thought it would also be fun to show you some of the original fabric laid up next to the faded quilt blocks. I saved some of the scraps that I had made my own clothes with.

These were used for a 4H project one summer when I was 11 or 12. I had made a tote bag and matching head scarf from the blue floral, and a very cute top and shorts set from the brown.

This pink was an Easter dress. I remember totally loving this. Look how badly the fabric faded in the quilt though. So sad.

I know I had something made of this, but can't remember what.

And I can remember not wanting to add this teddy bear fabric. It was so baby-ish! But Mom insisted that I could not be choosy with scraps, and to use all what we had. She said it would look cute once it was mixed in with the others.

This next one was one of my favorites. I had made a "maxi skirt" from this brown swirl when I was in 7th grade. I didn't use a pattern, and thought I was pretty cool coming up with my own design myself. How hard is a skirt with an elastic waist? ha-ha-ha.
As you can see.. some of these are actually extra quilt blocks that never made it into the quilt. The batting was that fluffy stuff that always bunched up!

And THIS fabric is older than me. I noticed a lot of 40's fabrics in this quilt that were probably just in the scrap bag. I WISH I had more of this.. isn't it fabulous? Look how bright it stayed when everything else faded.

Ok.. my most recent quilt I just showed yesterday. But I thought for this post I would show one that I made right before I started blogging. I've shown it before.. "Every Iota". It is in my daughter's room on her bed.

I hand quilted this, but if I would make it again, I would try my newly learned machine quilting skills. ☺
Hmmm. It is a Nine-patch again. And some of those fabrics have a very familiar theme.

That was a fun tour of your quilt and fabrics. It is amazing that you still have the wonderful first quilt in your possession. (A drop cloth! How awful!) Love the old fabrics and seeing them faded and unfaded.

Your daughter's quilt is truly beautiful...and I am ever grateful for the bits and pieces of scrap that you sent me.

I think 9 patch quilts are the just the best!

That quilt is darling!!! I love the fabrics in it, faded or not. Especially the teddy bears, lol! And that 40's fabric is awesome. Too bad it got used for a dropcloth [oh the horror].
Your daughter's quilt is wonderful!

Wow! How fun was this post....I have to be honest here, I adore the faded fabrics far more than the ones that are like the original....I guess I am just turned that way, the faded fabric has a charm all its own.

Boy, do I feel sorta silly taking up quilting at my age, and you made this remarkable treasure at 13 years old. I so wish someone would have gotten me interested in quilting long before now!!

I loved this post, the new quilt is very pretty too, gave me an idea on another quilt....and I have not even finished my first one!

Nine patch is timeless. Your first quilt has a very popular quilting technique called Big Stitch.

Such a cute post - I too have some old fabric scraps from sewing when I was young. Every once in a while I'll put a piece in a scrappy quilt. I saw a beautiful quilt at an outdoor concert it was a fan pattern - obviously old but not in too bad shape and intrically quilted - and - they were sitting on it and standing on it. I wanted to take it and run. That may have embarrassed my husband so I didn't. Sad it came to that end. Glad you were reunited with your first quilt.

What a wonderful -and huge- first quilt! And you were so young.
It's fun to see just how much those fabrics have faded..

Hi Eileen ~ I love this! The quilts are wonderful, the stories are great, and like everyone else, I'm in awe that you still have original, unfaded scraps of the fabrics from your first quilt!

The funniest part is that you've proven that quilters are fabric savants! You remember where most of these pieces of fabric came from and/or what they were originally used to make.

Thank you for sharing ~ and it's a pleasure to meet you! (By the way, I loved the "How to Make a Quilt Sandwich" tutorial ~ you're right, that's hilarious!)

Hi Eileen! What a clever teenager you were & even more so talented now. Isn't it amazing how looking at one fabric can bring back so many memories! I will always think of you when I hand-piece anything!

Love your first quilt! What a great job. Mom was right, it was good that you used the teddy bear fabric!

Your first quilt is lovely, and it is great that you remember where the fabrics are from. That is what makes these quilts so special. The teddybears make the quilt even more special. I don't know what a drop cloth is but it sounds awful judged by the comments you received. I remember your "Every Iota" quilt from before, it is very lovely too.

Wow! What a great post! I love your first quilt! And you were only 13! Wow! I can't believe that you still have the original fabrics! Your Mom was right! The bears are very cute! But a dropcloth? What's with that? Your latest quilt is beautiful too. I really enjoyed this post! Thanks for sharing!

That was fun reading about your first quilt and seeing the fabrics in both states of wear - and isn't it cool that you still have the scraps from those special 4-H projects? I can remember many fabrics from early sewing years and wish I'd kept more souvenirs like that.

Your new quilts for your daughter and the baby elephant quilt are very pretty - great job!

What a treasure Eileen! I know what you mean about faded fabrics. I had a similar angel wing top in the 1970s to the blue floral fabric in your quilt and was amazed when I compared the seam allowance to the sun faded part. I just hadn't noticed it fade.

Eileen, I know that old gents like me should not be all interested in squares and patterns and the like but I read your stuff and enjoy every word and every picture. We need to fill the world with Eileens!!!

I love that every IOTA quilt. Do you remembered I featured it a year ago? one day Eileen, if I do quilt...gosh, that will be a long time from now...it will be this pattern! I love it :D

I love your first quilt and that you still have some blocks that didn't make it into the quilt, fabric scraps from the quilt and best of all, that you remember what you made with the fabrics! I can see in my mind's eye the fabrics I used in a skirt I made in 7th grade and the suit I never finished but I don't have any of the actual fabrics!

Isn't 9-patch just the best, most versatile pattern? From your first to a recent quilt...its the pattern that highlights the fabrics.

I love your first quilt--so glad that you were able to rescue it! I also love the way that you show the fabrics, then and now! Your now quilt is beautiful, too! Thank you so much for sharing your lovely work!

That was a fabulous post -- it's sad your quilt is in such sad shape, but I'm glad it is now safe and sound again. Seeing the condition of the fabrics is amazing. Very interesting. Incredible how the 40's fabric has held up. I'm glad you pointed that out..

Hand quilting -- I keep reading about it... you gals are killing me.. I'm not sure I'll ever have the stamina to do this -- but I admire all of you who do!

Thanks for sharing -- it was a joy to read.

Oh it is nice to see what is going on at the attic. I loved seeing your first and last. The amazing part is that you kept fabric from your childhood!!! OOh how I wish I had. And that you still had some left over blocks from your first quilt. I love 9 patch quilts. Love them. Your fabrics are lovely. And yes the one with the little squares from the 40s is my favorite. Though I like them all. Your new quilt is really cute too. Il ove the fabrics on that one as well. I'm sure your daughter loves it.

Ellie,
What gorgeous old quilts.....such a treasure! It's so neat that you started sewing and quilting so young. I taught both my girls to sew at an early age so they will always pick it up if they choose.
Thanks for sharing your quilts.
I would like to put you on my blog list of friends.
