Monday this past week was Hitty Club. Hitty is my little wooden doll that I like to sew clothes for. She has a history and everything, and there are collectors who go bananas over her. I don't really collect her per se, but I do enjoy getting together once a month with some friends to play with her, and divide up our fabric stashes. Also to snack. It is my duty to bring the tea cookies each time. I always stick to this same recipe 'cause everyone loves them...
Lots of times we have a project planned where someone shows how to make something. But this month we just dumped fabrics on the table and spent the day cutting out little dresses. The theme was Strawberry Festival, so there were a lot of strawberry prints. Of course my Betsy McCall always attends to show off watch, and she brought her new cousin Barbara..
You can see some of the Hitty dolls standing around watching too. After all.. it is Hitty Club. Those bags hold teeny tiny snaps for the backs of the dresses. I really loved some of these prints. Especially that yellow one with the little irons.. and the one above with the tiny birds.
One of the girls brought a treasure for show and tell. She found these handmade dolls at a flea market.. for a very good bargain. I forget now exactly who the figures are... but they are Liberty of London dolls made between 1930-1960. I found just a little bit of info here.
Anyways.. we were to be drinking coffee and talking/laughing and seeing what everyone brought to show cutting out Hitty dresses. The girls took care of me and cut some for me.. so I brought five of them home to sew up.
It was specified that we must all complete at least one of the dresses before our next meeting.. which is a shopping spree to Charm and Berlin Ohio at the end of June. We will each take one of our dolls dressed in a new outfit..(I know you can't see me right now.. but I am totally jumping up and down with joy just thinking about this trip!!) I chose to finish this green and black one with the little strawberry print. Think I'll appliqué some circles of fussy cut strawberries to the skirt to make polka dots. I've got the freezer paper cut and ironed onto the fabric to make the appliqués, and one dot cut.
The girls are so good to me. I know they hate seeing me dig through the trash.. so they piled up their scraps in the middle of the table in baggies for me to take home.
P.S. I couldn't leave without showing you my rose bush this morning.
And no one ever heard of saving selvages.. so I educated them a little bit on that. I have never done anything with them.. but I know some people who do. ☺

Tomorrow I want to show you a new park we found to take our dog for a walk. So come back if you want to see a lot of green. ☺

Hope you're having a lovely weekend!

I love that yellow fabric with the little irons too! I also love that red one in the baggie but I can't really see what the little motifs are - handbags or shoes?
Whenever I cut off any selvages off gorgeous Japanese fabrics, I will pause to think "Hmmm...I wonder if Eileen would ever want these?" :)
And Hitty is still all Greek to me. I've not heard of Hitty till I heard of Eileen.
cute doll story but the rose bush of course is my favorite.
Your Hitty dress is going to be adorable! Can't wait to see it!

Thanks for sharing details about your Hitty club - I've wondered when reading your blog about it. It sounds like fun and I love those scraps - the one with irons is so cute.
My Hittys are jealous! They are in love with that fabric--especially the irons--and pointed out they have not had new clothes forever. In fact, they informed me that the clothes you made them are SUPERIOR to what I made them. Hittys are such fashionistas. That future shopping trip sound like so much fun.
Those cookies look yummy to me.
Your rose bush is really blooming. SO pretty!
it's fun to peek at your dress-making-plans. and i can't wait to see those hand-made-polka-dots.
I love when you post about your Hitty Doll! Thank you so much for sharing!
You always share the prettiest cookies. Oh my goodness you're going to have so much fun in Charm and Berlin. I always go to Miller's in Charm FIRST!!!
How cute, those doll clothes are so small. I don't know if I could sew those or not. I've started to save my own selvege edges. Got quite a few.
Wow, busy girl. Love the little dresses. You are so patient! And lovely roses too. Ah the joys of summer...

Sounds like it was a great Hitty Club day! Love Betsy's outfit and her cousin's too! Even the cookies were adorable!
The Hitty dress fabrics are all very sweet. The irons are even better than my sewing machines I keep saving for something Special! Having seen your Hitty cookies a couple of times I don't wonder at all why they want you to bake them. To go shopping with specialists must be so great!
Your rose is lovely.
V. here...
I love your Hitty and doll posts. Do you have any hints for making doll clothes. You have probably done it so many times that you don't think about it. I could use any hints. I love the little crochet dress on Betsy McCall. All those fabrics are so cute. I can/t wait to see the finished black strawberry and green dress. Thanks. V.
How you deal with the itty bitty hitty pieces is beyond me. I apprecaite your work so much. You are an exacting sew-er and your work is fabulous. I love seeing what you do at Hitty Club.
Hia Eileen, I'm finally catching up with you in Blogland. Love your rose bush!
Here I was shocked when Dunelm Mill went from £3.99 a bag of stuffing to £5.99 within a week! Ridiculous! I'll be shopping around.
Ooo Laura would've loved that theme! The dresses are so dinky. Your next trip sounds like a lot of fun.
