I Love My Clothesline

Don't we all?
Ok. I don't have any new crafty things to show at all. The best I can do is something old. I came across this quilt while cleaning out a linen cupboard. I had forgotten it was in there. It is my first quilt I made when I was around 12. Of course Mom helped me quite a bit. I'm pretty sure she put all the big blocks together, but I definitely remember piecing the nine-patch blocks.. because I thought it would take me forever. The fabric was leftovers from my own clothes that I had made, and pieces from Mom's scrap bag. That brown and orange flowered patch was a cute summer tunic with puffed sleeves and a pair of shorts I made in 4H one year. I modeled it in a "fashion show" at the county fair. The one pink floral was a dress, and the yellow/seafoam green was a nightgown. I wanted to use only new "pretty" fabrics, but I had to also mix in some of the old ugly stuff, because we never wasted a scrap. This quilt is fairly worn out. I wish now I would have just folded it up and kept it, but when I was growing up I never heard of such a thing.

Ok. I hope I've been getting back to everyone who has made such lovely comments, if I have missed anyone I'll try and catch up. Been playing spring spruce-up around here for over a week. So this is what still awaits me. Not even opened yet. So I have a ways to go.

be back later!

oh, your quilt is beautiful...i have several from when my boys were little that are a bit raggedy and i feel badly about that...but my mom told me they're supposed to get that way...it just means they were loved...=)...i need to paint, too...but haven't even bought any so you're a step ahead of me!

How fun to have a quilt you made when so young and out of fabrics from clothes that you remember! That's a very special quilt - thanks for sharing! I always wanted to participate in 4H, but I was a city girl!

I'm ahead of you with the painting project - but I'm with you on the "nothing new" crafty side.

Wow! I was making clothes when I was 12, but not a quilt. It's beautiful.

Quilts aren't made to be "saved for later". They are to be loved and used. :)

I love that picture and your quilt is wonderful. What great memories are sewn up in that quilt, and nice that you still have it! Ugh -
painting, not one of my favorite things to do :-)!!!

This is a lovely quilt and so big I can very well understand the doubts about ever getting it ready! Is it against the rules or common practice to patch up the patchwork? I have been adding new layers to my son's quilt. The old shirts were not all very strong and the quilt keeps wearing out where it folds over the bed's wooden edge. I still have the same fabric, but it doesn't need to be the same as originally. Just a thought.

Very pretty quilt and very pretty photo! You should frame the quilts on the clothes line. It would be a wonderful memory/photo to look at every day,

Your quilt is gorgeous! And how lovely to have it made out of your clothing scraps - you were a very talented 12 year old! Thanks for sharing it with us. Lucy xx

I LOVE the vision and picture of quilts hanging on the line. My mother hung all our clothes out everyday. I still marvel at that. I grew up in a row home, too. We had 3 stories plus the basement where the laundry room was and she would carry the laundry up to the roof deck on the 2nd floor and hang out the clothes. I just can't believe she did that! Anyway your quilt is super darling. I know your feeling of loving a worn out quilt. Oh well. Quilts are made for using. Good luck with all the home improvements. I don't envy you.

That is so so special! I hope it is filled with happy memories as well as the irksome 9 squares.

Isn't it amazing we can remember clothes from our childhoods. I can barely remember clothes I had a few years ago yet I can remember an angel wing top from the 1970s and how it felt on.
